What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition that makes the spine to curve abnormally. Particularly, the spine is curved side-to-side, taking the form of a letter S or C. Scoliosis causes significant health problems to the person affected, such as breathing issues, heart difficulties, and muscle spasms.

Probable Causes of Scoliosis

There is no known cause for scoliosis as some people are born with a certain degree spinal curvature, and others develop it as they get older. However, medical experts believe that certain factors can make someone prone to develop scoliosis. Genetics plays a major role in the development of this condition, and so does birth defects. Underlying problems like spondylosis and osteoporosis can lead to the curvature of the spine. Muscle disorders, spinal tumors, and abnormal fibrillin metabolism are other causes that can contribute to the progression of scoliosis.

Signs of Scoliosis

Scoliosis presents obvious signs that a person has it, such as:

  • One hip is much higher than the other hip
  • The waist or shoulders are uneven
  • Same as the hips, one shoulder blade is more distinguished than the other
  • One side of the body sticks out more than the other side

Scoliosis Treatments From Our Chiropractor

While chiropractic care cannot correct or reverse the abnormal curvature of the spine, it can definitively help improve the condition. For minor curves, a back brace can be worn to prevent the curve from becoming worse. In moderate cases, spinal adjustments and corrective exercise can improve the function of the joints, improve mobility and posture, increase comfort, reduce pain. These chiropractic care treatments can also prevent the spine from curving more.
