What Is Whiplash?

In day to day life, our neck muscles do a great job of bracing our tendons and spine for any impacts that come our way. In a car accident, however, the neck does not know an impact is about to occur. This means that the muscles have no time to brace for impact. As a result, the muscles and tendons of the neck may be forced to bend in unnatural ways to deal with the force of the accident. This may result in whiplash.

Whiplash Symptoms

Whiplash symptoms are not the same for everyone. Many people experience a sore neck, shoulders, and upper back, fatigue, mood changes, insomnia, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating. Movement of the head and neck tends to increase neck discomfort. Pain may also radiate from the upper back/ shoulders into the arms. Less commonly, some people experience depression and irritability.

Whiplash Treatment

If you have recently been in a car accident, it's important that you seek treatment from a chiropractor right away. It's easiest to treat whiplash before symptoms occur, and the sooner you receive treatment, the less time it will take you to make a full recovery. Treatment for whiplash may include corrective exercises, spinal adjustment, a neck brace, hot/cold therapy, medical massage, and more. No two cases of whiplash are exactly alike. When you come in for your first appointment, our chiropractor will talk with you about your accident in order to fully understand the circumstances that caused your injury. From there, he will make a unique treatment plan for you. While some people begin to feel whiplash relief after their first appointment, it may take a few weeks for the healing process to begin.
