Back and Neck Pain FAQs

Is back or neck pain keeping you from doing the things you want to do and damaging your quality of life? Dr. Kevin Lynch of Lynch Chiropractic Center can help. Dr. Lynch has more than 30 years of experience treating back and neck pain in the Lexington community. He has put together these back and neck pain FAQs to answer any questions you might have about chiropractic care and how it can help you treat and manage acute and chronic neck and back pain.

What Are Some Common Causes of Neck and Back Pain?

Common causes of neck and back pain include injuries of all kinds including poor posture and vertebral subluxations. Subluxations are misalignments of the spinal vertebrae that can put pressure on the nerves emerging from the spinal column, causing pain.

What Makes a Chiropractor Qualified to Treat My Neck and Back Pain?

Chiropractors are doctors who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions of the musculoskeletal system. Doctors of chiropractic complete medical training as rigorous as that of any other doctor. It includes four years of pre-medical, undergraduate education, followed by four to five years of advanced medical training. In addition to orthopedics, human anatomy, neurology, and physiology, chiropractors also receive training in nutrition, diagnostic imaging, fitness therapy, and lab procedures. A significant portion of a chiropractor's education is spent learning the manipulative techniques used to treat pain and dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system.

How Does a Chiropractor Treat Neck and Back Pain?

Chiropractors like Dr. Lynch treat neck and back pain by using their hands, and sometimes instruments, to gently manipulate the spinal vertebrae, joints, and bones. Chiropractic manipulations correct subluxations, or misalignments of the vertebrae that compress nerves and cause pain. Manipulations can also help restore the proper functioning of bones and joints throughout the body. Nutritional therapy, massage therapy, exercise recommendations, physical therapy, and other wellness treatments may also be used.

Do I Need to Keep Seeing the Chiropractor?

It is a popular misconception that once you see a chiropractor, you need to keep going for the rest of your life. The fact of the matter is that many patients need only a limited number of chiropractic sessions to heal from acute pain. Of course, many of Dr. Lynch's patients are dealing with chronic issues and managing recurrent back and neck pain, and for these patients, ongoing care is best. Dr. Lynch will form a treatment plan suited to your individual needs. Chiropractic care can also be, and often is, administered on a preventive basis, to keep back and neck pain symptoms from occurring.

What Causes the Popping Sound that Happens During an Adjustment?

When Dr. Lynch adjusts your spine, you may hear a cracking or popping sound. This sound is not a cause for concern. It is the result of gas bubbles in the synovial fluid popping. The popping phenomenon is similar to what happens when you crack your knuckles.

  • "Dr. Ryan Lynch has been adjusting my back and neck for the past month, and I will have to say that each time I go, I come out feeling more mobile and less in pain. He also explains what he is about to do and why, making you feel more involved in the procedure. The aftermath of my curved spine and a motorcycle accident started to show in forms of discomfort and pain in the recent months, and this was the place a friend of mine had highly recommended. I am glad to have taken the recommendation."
